Regional Knowledge Hub for the Care and Treatment of HIV/AIDS in Eurasia

In response to the rapidly increasing HIV/AIDS pandemic in the region, the independent, non-governmental Regional Knowledge Hub for the Care and Treatment of HIV/AIDS in Eurasia was established in 2004 and is supported by Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Technische Züsammenarbeit (GTZ) and the World Health Organization's Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Euro) in conjunction with the American International Health Alliance (AIHA).

The Knowledge Hub serves as a crucial capacity-building mechanism for reaching WHO’s “3 by 5” targets in the region by providing a unified, evidence-based, organizational framework for national efforts to build the health system capacity necessary to provide high-quality care to HIV-infected individuals. Its activities focus primarily on designated priority countries, including Armenia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Tajikistan, and Ukraine, which are currently experiencing some of the fastest growing rates of new HIV infections in the world.

Southern Ukraine AIDS Education Centre (SUAEC)

Based at the Odessa Oblast Hospital and established in June 2003, the Southern Ukraine AIDS Education Centre (SUAEC) used a hands-on, team-based approach to train physicians, nurses, and other professionals involved in the care and treatment of HIV/AIDS. The Centre's expertise lies in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV, pediatric HIV/AIDS, and the prevention of occupational exposure. In 2003, SUAEC was named a WHO Centre of Excellence.

AIDS Training and Education Center (ATEC), Saint Petersburg

In 2006, the American International Health Alliance (AIHA)—in conjunction with the St. Petersburg Medical Academy for Post Graduate Studies and affiliated clinical sites at the St. Petersburg AIDS Center and the Ust Izhora Clinical Center for Children and Women with HIV—has established an AIDS Training and Education Center (ATEC) in Saint Petersburg, Russia. This project, which was developed with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and supported by the Russian Federation Ministry of Health and Social Development, represents a key step in the development of a unified framework for Russia’s national efforts to build the health system capacity necessary to provide high-quality care to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).

Orenburg HIV/AIDS Information Resource Center

The HIV/AIDS Information Resource Center in Orenburg was established by Orenburg State Medical Academy and American International Health Alliance (AIHA) in 2007 to assist Russia's efforts to scale-up HIV and AIDS-related services. This project is made possible with support of a partnership project on HIV Treatment, Care and Support between Orenburg Oblast and Elmhurst Clinical Hospital, NY. The partnership is financed by USAID through PEPFAR.

Baltic AIDS Training and Education Center (ATEC), Saint Petersburg

The mission of the Baltic AIDS Training and Education Center (ATEC) - St. Petersburg is to improve institutional and human resource capacity to support the ongoing scale-up of high quality HIV/AIDS care and treatment services in the Russian Federation and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

The Baltic ATEC - St. Petersburg was established in 2008 by the St. Petersburg City AIDS Center, Pavlov State Medical University, the Republican Infectious Disease Hospital at Ust-Izhora, the American International Health Alliance (AIHA), and other strategic partners.
